Let's begin by being clear that the Endangered Feces in the title of this best-of compilation find an all-too literal realization about halfway into this painfully hilarious DVD. Of course, we mean "painful" literally too: Tom Green has one of those senses of humor that makes you cringe in horror while laughing yourself to hysterics. Funnier yet is to watch Green's parents respond. They're so used to his over-the-edge pranks that they greet graphic lesbian pornography painted on the hood of their car or a house full of barnyard animals with a certain blasé, we've-seen-it-all reserve. The DVD features a full palette of Green's repertoire, from staggering drunkenly about town at night in drag to a guitar ballad sung at the tattooed buttocks of his best friend. One of the funniest, and more sophisticated, stunts involves hanging a painting he made on a blank wall in Ottawa's National Gallery and returning a week later to distress museum visitors by adding details to it with a Magic Marker. Needless to say, Green spends a fair amount of time on this DVD running from security guards. The DVD extras include outtakes from Green's appearances on Open Mike with Mike Bullard and The Dini Petty Show. Definitely not for everybody, The Very Worst of Tom Green will bring some of you to tears laughing--and you know who you are. --Erik Macki

Steven Spielberg's 1982 hit about a stranded alien and his loving relationship with a fatherless boy (Henry Thomas) struck a chord with audiences everywhere, and it furthered Spielberg's reputation as a director of equally strong commercial sensibilities and classical leanings. Henry Thomas gives a strong, emotional performance as E.T.'s young friend, Robert MacNaughton and Drew Barrymore make a solid impression as his siblings, and Dee Wallace is lively as the kids' mother. The special effects almost look a bit quaint now with all the computer advancements that have occurred since, but they also have more heart behind them than a lot of what we see today. --Tom Keogh

But while the well-matched lovebirds wrestle with a gimmicky plot (she has no short-term memory, so he has to treat every encounter as their first), director Peter Segal (who directed Sandler in Anger Management) ignores the intriguing potential of their predicament (think Memento meets Groundhog Day) and peppers the proceedings with the kind of juvenile humor that Sandler fans have come to expect. And Barrymore decided, as producer, that the perfect actress to play this virtuous, clean-cut, and downright annoying geek would be... Drew Barrymore? It's hard to believe that after The Wedding Singer Barrymore's not getting enough dopey, formulaic, predictable romantic comedies coming across her desk. The complete inability to buy Barrymore as unattractive, awkward, and unpopular ruins Never Been Kissed from the start, but it's doubtful a better actress could have saved it. The jokes fall flat, the romance between Barrymore and her English teacher (played by Michael Vartan) lacks chemistry, and the portrayals of high school and the newspaper newsroom is clichéd and uninspired (big surprise here: the director, Raja Gosnell, previously made Home Alone 3). Gosnell can't even give the gifted character actor, John C. Reilly, anything to do. Enlisting a few eager and bemused producers and directors as allies, Herzlinger goes through a self-improvement campaign--exercising, finding out what Barrymore likes--while also interviewing people who know her, including actor Eric Roberts and Charlie's Angels co-screenwriter John August. The tricky part, of course, is not giving anyone the impression that Herzlinger is just a sophisticated stalker, especially when he's busy wrangling invitations to celebrity parties so he can get near the object of his lifelong crush. The film runs a little low on steam in its second half, and the suggestion that the movie is really about the beautiful pursuit of a worthwhile dream, and not just a first-feature gimmick, gets a little precious. Any film would have its hands full trying to depict the chaotic chain of events and tangled plot of the infamous shooting, so rather than refine any single viewpoint, the story unfolds with a Rashomon-like quality, depicting the tale of the assault in a series of flashbacks. Sometimes this leads to flashbacks within flashbacks, and even flashbacks within flashbacks within flashbacks, but don't worry, we've got ominous musical cues and grainy 16mm black-and-white stock to help us keep the story straight, which is more than we had at the time. The movie does take a critical look at the television and print tabloids and their roles in the inflation of this event. It awkwardly, perhaps a little self-consciously, depicts the escalating and infringing influence of the media until it is impossible to extricate the reporters from the reported. Ultimately the "detached" press finds itself posting portions of Amy's bail, recording Joey's defense on live shock radio, encouraging those closest to the players to record supposedly intimate conversations, and then cheerfully reporting the ensuing pandemonium with a tsk-tsk aside and a sly wink.
